Prepwork (5 Minutes)
If you are new to sewing or perhaps you are use to buying fabric by the yard, you may be new to the term “layer cake.” A layer cake is 42 pre-cut 10” x 10” squares. They are from a collection of fabrics and typically has two of each design or 21 different pattern fabrics.
The beauty of buying a layer cake is you do not have to spend the time cutting fabric, it gives you a variety of patterns that all color match, and they are ready to sew when you are.
For this project, you will need to gather a layer cake (I used Poppie Cotton Sunshine & Chamomile), pins, an iron and your sewing machines. You will also need both cotton and insul-bright batting.
Cut (1) 6” piece of ribbon or use a scrap piece of fabric if you want to have a tab to hang from.
Cut (1) 10” square from cotton batting. I used scrap batting from previous quilts. Since hot pads need to withstand high temperatures, it is important to use only cotton fabric and thread.
Cut (1) 10” square of Insul-bright. Insul-bright is a needle-punched, insulated material ideal for crafters. Pot holders, oven mitts and casserole covers are all ideal projects made functional and safe with Insul-Bright. It consists of polyester fibers, needle-punched through a reflective metalized polyester film. The needled material is breathable and won't break down with washing. The polyester fibers resist conduction while the reflective metalized polyester film reflects radiant energy, hot or cold, back to its source. Insul-Bright is not recommended for microwave use.
Sewing (10 minutes)
For this next step, you will need to layer your fabric. With your layer cake you can either take two of the same pattern, or pick two patterns and have one for the top and one for the bottom so you can have a set of two hotpads.
When layering, put insul bright, cotton, then fabric A right side up, and fabric B right side facing down. Fold your ribbon in half and put the tails in the corner, in-between the layers of fabric, and pin. Pin around the square.
Sew ½” seam allowance and leave a 2” gap for turning. Trim the corners, and turn. You can use a chopstick or knitting needle to push the edge points out.
Iron the hot pad. Next pin the opening and sew ?” around the entire perimeter of the hot pad. Then sew an X through the middle or quilt as desired.
Bonus
Get creative with the hot pads! These are quick and easy gift that are fun to try in a variety of ways.
You can embroider a name or even just a letter for who you are giving the hot pad to.
You can sew scraps to the cotton layer and make a quilt as you go style for one side and have a 10” layer cake for the bottom.
