Hey Boo by Moda Pumpkin Sweatshirt

  1. Pattern

For this project, you will need a Cricut Maker or a pumpkin outline. If you purchase your fabric from us, we can send you a free outline!

If you use Cricut, you can either purchase a pumpkin graphic or upload your own pumpkin design. For this project, my pumpkin was 10” x 12” and the face was roughly 6” x 6”.

I found it helpful to cut the pumpkin out on cardstock first to help me know which fabrics were included in the patchwork and where the eyes would cover.

  1. Laying out your Fabric

The next step is to lay out your fabric. The Hey Boo by Moda is a girly twist on Halloween fabric. It has a mix of pinks, purples, green, orange, black, and white fabric. For my pumpkin, I picked one 2.5” square for the stem and a mixture of fabrics for the body of the pumpkin.

For the body of the pumpkin, I laid out 4 rows 6 across. I tried to alternate from a darker print to a lighter print every other and mix and match the colors (leaving out green & black).

For my eyes, nose, and mouth, I picked out seven black squares.

  1. Chain Piece Squares

Chain Piecing is where you sew blocks together without stoping to cut. It saves time and thread. I sewed together square 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and so on.

Then I cut the thread in between and sewed each row 2&3 and 4&5 together to make row 1.

Next I attached the green square in the middle of square 3&4.

From there I ironed each row with my mini Oliso iron. Before sewing each row together.

  1. Quilting the Pumpkin

For this project I laid my new rectangle on top of the 12” fusible fleece. I used fleece where only one side is fusible. You could use batting or double sided fleece for more durability. If you are going to have your cricut cut the pumpkin, use the paper template to ensure your fabric is in the correct position.

I love the look of the classic X in a patchwork quilt. For this project I eyeballed it and sewed diagonal across the pumpkin in both directions to get the cross hatch look.

  1. Cutting the Pumpkin

Next is cutting the shape of the pumpkin. I opted to have my cricut the shape. This ensured it was the same size as my template. However, you can pin the paper pattern and cut out with scissors.

  1. Attaching the Jack-O-Lantern Face

First cut out the face from the paper template. You need (1) square for each eye and the nose. Then you need to sew (4) squares for the mouth.

Pin the paper to the fabric and trim out. Next use your paper template to line up the placement of the face. Pin and satin stitch onto your pumpkin.

*Note that you could add the face before quilting, but I wanted to have the black stand out more, so I added it after.

  1. Attaching to Sweatshirt

Finally it is time to add to your sweatshirt!

I made a mark 2” down from the bottom of the collar. I then found where the center was. I placed the pumpkin and used a ruler to double check how far from each sleeve.

Iron the fusible in place. You may have to go a little warmer or iron from the backside to ensure it adheres.

Pin in place and satin or blanket stitch around the edge of the pumpkin and stem to affix it to your sweatshirt. You may need to remove your sewing tool box so you can have the back of the sweatshirt under the sewing portion of your machine. (you don’t want to accidentally sew the front and back together!)
